The “Friendly” Greeting That Wasn’t: Why Consent Matters for Dogs

A wagging tail isn’t always a yes. Learn to read the whole dog.

Poppy wagged her tail and leaned forward. A stranger reached out. In that moment, her body stiffened.

The trainer stopped the greeting and explained: consent is a full-body signal. Soft eyes, loose posture, balanced weight, easy breath.

When dogs are unsure, they often offer “appeasement” behaviors that look friendly to humans—licking lips, turning away, paw lifts.

A safer greeting begins with distance. Ask the dog to approach you. Turn your body sideways. Let the dog sniff and leave if they choose.

Respecting “no” prevents bites. It also builds trust.

The goal is not access. The goal is safety.
